Dubai Airport Flooded, Diverting Flights and Stranding Passengers
Heavy Rainfall Causes Airport Closures and Transportation Disruptions
Dubai International Airport, one of the world's busiest, has been severely impacted by torrential rainfall, leading to the diversion of flights and stranding of passengers.
According to airport officials, the flooding began on Tuesday night and continued through Wednesday morning, leaving limited transportation options for travelers. By midnight Tuesday, 559 inches of rain had fallen on Dubai over 24 hours, surpassing the average annual rainfall of 373 inches at the airport.
As a result of the flooding, multiple incoming flights were diverted to other airports in the region, causing delays and disruptions for passengers. Kanish Kumar Deb Barman, a traveler who was scheduled to depart from Dubai to Paris, reported being stranded at the airport since 4 am when his flight was delayed due to the weather conditions.
By the end of Tuesday, more than 142mm (559 inches) of rain had soaked Dubai, significantly exceeding the average annual rainfall of 947mm (373 inches). The heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding and transportation disruptions throughout the city, with many roads and highways closed or impassable.
