Kiprusoff: Flames legend honored with jersey retirement
The Calgary Flames have announced that they will retire the number of Miikka Kiprusoff, a legendary goaltender who played for the team for nine seasons.
Kiprusoff, who retired in 2013, is the Flames' franchise leader in wins (305), shutouts (41), and games played by a goaltender (576).
The 47-year-old Kiprusoff will be the fourth Flames player to have his number retired, joining forwards Lanny McDonald (No. 9), Jarome Iginla (No. 12), and goaltender Mike Vernon (No. 30).
"Miikka Kiprusoff is one of the most decorated players in Flames history," said Flames general manager Brad Treliving. "He was a key member of our team for many years, and he helped us achieve a lot of success. We are proud to retire his number and honor his legacy."
Kiprusoff was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Sharks in 2000, and he played for the team for three seasons before being traded to the Flames in 2003.
Kiprusoff quickly became a fan favorite in Calgary, and he helped the Flames reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2004. He was also a member of the Finnish national team that won the bronze medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Kiprusoff retired from the NHL in 2013, and he was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014.
