O.J. Simpson Nearly Cast as the Terminator
Gale Anne Hurd Addresses Longstanding Rumor
Studio Executive Allegedly Pitched Idea to James Cameron
In a recent interview, The Terminator producer Gale Anne Hurd addressed the longstanding rumor that O.J. Simpson was considered for the leading role in the 1984 James Cameron sci-fi film. The rumor has resurfaced in recent years, following Simpson's death in 2023.
According to Hurd, a studio executive did indeed pitch the idea of casting Simpson as the Terminator to Cameron. However, Cameron rejected the suggestion, ultimately choosing Arnold Schwarzenegger for the role.
"It's true that a studio executive suggested O.J.," Hurd said. "But James always had Arnold in mind. He felt that Arnold's physicality and presence were essential to the character."
Simpson, a former football star and actor, was acquitted of murder charges in 1995 following a highly publicized trial. However, he has been the subject of controversy and speculation throughout his life.
The casting of Simpson as the Terminator would have undoubtedly changed the trajectory of the film and Simpson's own career. It is a fascinating what-if moment that continues to generate discussion among both fans and critics.
